GIRLS is #FullHouse and Lena Dunham is #DJTanner

Now that the hit HBO dramedy GIRLS has been nominated for 5 Emmys I think it’s time we all said we all said what we have been thinking since the show debuted.

This show has already been made. 4 girls making their way in the trendy city, mistakes and all?  Friendships, relationships, boys, parents, clothes?  Hello?

Mariclare Lawson explains how HBO Girls is Full House and Lena Dunham is DJ Tanner on Cramp My Style
They just transplanted the “girls” from  San Fransisco to New York and boosted their age about a decade, but it’s basically the same show.

GIRLS is Full House and Lena Dunham is DJ Tanner.

And there is nothing wrong with that because DJ Tanner is a TV god.  She stole the heart of millions, ne, billions world-wide for over a decade as we watched her search for her true identity.

Voice of a generation?  DJ Tanner was the voice of a nation.

When she cried, we cried.  When she aqua-netted her perm to a crunchy finish, so did we.  When she ate lunch in the phone booth at school, we climbed right in there with her and listened to the time in California over and over and over again!  And where would DJ be without her GIRLS?    Stephanie, Michelle and even the ever lovable Kimmie Gibbler, all fit into their new roles on HBO’s GIRLS.   Allow me to make the obvious comparisons:

We watched from 1987- 1995 as D.J. struggled to find love.  She bounced from one bad relationship to the next.  Hello- Viper anyone?

And now we are watching Hannah make the exact same mistakes!

DJ’s only voice of reason?  Her beloved uncle Joey, and Jesse, and Danny.  Oh wait, Danny was her dad, not her uncle.

Anywho- she had the male figures offering her their wisdom and guidance.  (Because they had their lives so together and the most functional love lives ever.)  Uncle Joey was doing Bullwinkle impressions in the basement and Uncle Jessie was shacked up in the attic with a wife and two kids.  They were the obvious choice for role models.  Just like Full House, the boys on GIRLS are the ones giving the advice.  Ray is basically Hannah’s uncle Jesse.  Ray is John Stamos. Offering love life and fashion advice to young Hannah:

These HBO girls go through the same problems as the TGIF girls.  It’s as if Lena Dunham just watched Full House and wrote the scenes down verbatim.  Full House had it’s famous  catch phrases:

GIRLS also has catch phrases:

GIRLS has provocative titles for it’s episodes:

  • Hard Being Easy
  • The Crackcident
  • Vagina Panic

Just like Full House:

  • Back to School Blues
  • The Legend of Ranger Jones
  • A Fish Called Martin

Now was “The Legend of Ranger Jones” the episode where Stephanie takes her ex upstairs to have sex and Kimmie watches from behind a curtain?

GIRLS has hippest clothes, hottest music and dance sequences.

Sound familiar?

Hopefully GIRLS will have the same long, awards laden run that TGIF’s blockbuster Full House had.  With 16 wins and 19 nominations, Full House was a force to be reckoned with in the 80s and 90s and a cultural phenomenon.

Sure, non of those awards were Emmy’s but who needs an Emmy when you’ve got a Stamos?
