Today I’m Gonna Party Like it’s 1989!

It’s been a long time since we partied like it was 1999.  And when we actually did get around to partying in 1999 like it was 1999, it was kind of a let down because of the end of world looming, or at least the bank not working ‘cuz of Y2k.  Does anyone even remember that?  The millennium was sooooo last decade.  Everyone knows the 90s are what is in style now.  So why not take two steps back like good ole’ Paula Abdul and M.C. Scat Cat and go all the way back to 1989.  It was a terrific year.  Am I right? What’s that?  You need a refresher course.  Well, I’d be happy to take you on a guided tour.

We all wait in line for "Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing". The only game we had

The Lawson household got an Apple Computer.  Here it is in all it’s glory.  And yes, here are my sister Linda and I with our friends lined up to use it.  Notice there is no chair at the table.  Nope.  No chair needed my friends!  It is standing room only in this house!  Because your turn at the computer will be so intense, you won’t even have time to sit!

My frizz almost does not fit in the photo

And don’t think I would have neglected to mention this little travesty of style.  Yes, 1989 also brought to the Lawson household a little thing I like to call “The Decade of the Home Perm“  My hair is as wide as is long, and that ain’t natural.  Sidenote: That is Bullwinkle on Linda’s XL T-Shirt.  Obviously something my mom picked up for free from someone, as Linda hated Bullwinkle and Uncle Joey’s impression on Full House.

On this very day in 1989, January 10th, I was in the 4th grade.  Ah, the times we had! Solar System, my first taste of graffiti and of course the time I peed my pants while wearing my favorite outfit of all time…in class…did I mention it was a skirt?  This skirt.

My favorite bubble skirt ruined by urine

Good times.  No, great times.  But, I’m not here to talk about peeing the floor at age 11, no, I’m here to talk about one of the best parties I ever went to in the 4th grade.  That party happen to be at my house because…drum roll please.

It was my very own Hawaiian Themed Birthday Party!  I will give you a moment to catch your breath.  I know, it’s a pretty “out there” concept for Naugatuck circa 1989.  Well, between my mom and my 3 sisters, the possibilities were endless!

As evidenced by these amazing images all captured by what looks like some type of toy camera operated by our cat Mame.  These photos capture the essence of the party: a perfect combination of shoeless dancing and whining.  Our outfits were pretty top notch.  Gotta give the credit to my sister Nad for the brilliance on that one.  Also I love that even though I am the birthday girl I still manage to have an enormous hole and run in my tights.  I never really cared about the little stuff like quality.

Hand made leis, leotards and fabric skirts.  So cute.  Even my friends who came in sweaters looked festive in their leis!  It was January after all.  And did I mention my dad insisted on NOT putting the heat on in our house? Why do you think there was so much dancing?  We were trying to keep warm!

The table setting would have made Martha Stewart envious.  Streamers, punch in a bowl, little pineapples and palm trees made out of construction paper??  I guess it comes as no surprise that my mom was a 1st grade teacher.  My sisters and I even made, what at the time seemed like life size palm trees to put around the house.  I found one in the attic recently, it was about five inches high.  Hey, I had barely been to the other side of Naugatuck in 1989, what the heck did I know about Palm trees?

mmmmmmm....looks delicious!

The cake.  A tour de force of confectionery pleasures.  In the shape of a pineapple and in the taste of a pineapple.  How did my mother do it?  I may never know.

Back in 1989 they didn’t ave such things as pineapple shaped cake tins.  It was a sight to behold.  Unfortunately this crude photo, if you can even call it that, is the only remaining image of this magical sugary dream.  As you can see, Linda could barely contain her excitement as the candles were blown out.

Linda's thinking, "When the heck is it MY birthday?"

What a way to spend a birthday! Partying the way the Lord intended us to!  In leotards and neon headbands, lip-syncing to Cyndi Lauper and probably ending the day in tears.   And maybe, if we’re lucky, peeing our pants in public.

      • Just fabulous! I had a Bee-Gees party in 1980. It as so FUN!!! We had the best time disco dancing and singing. Thank you for a wounderful trip into the past tath was simple, tactile and fun! Enjoy Freshly Pressed! I will never forget having to hel pclean my friend up in 5th grade after she pooped her pants. Never. Forget. Those things are embarassing. A wonderful post!

  1. I’m gonna see if I can dig out my old Z Cavariiccis. I couldn’t squeeze into them when I was a skinny 14 year old, but maybe they’ve stretched over time and my fat 36 year old gut won’t get in the way.

    • Hey man the 90s are back fashion wise so bust those things out!!! On our cramp Facebook page we put up a great pic of some Joey Buttafuoco pants. You should go take a look and see if they remind you of yours!!

  2. 1989 San Francisco, Ca. The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising was the college I attended, and graduated from that year. I am guessing that my friends and I were partying in a bit of a different style than you and your friends. Hmmm… Let’s see… Clubs, mini skirts, dancing with shoes on… It was a fun time, but man I had a lot of time consuming homework! Oh not to mention a job that I worked 35 hours a week. I did not sleep much that year! Some funny clothes and hair too, as you can imagine a Fashion design student would wear!

Enjoyed the trip back in time Thank you!

Oh by the way, Have you ever dreamed of writing that Novel? Do you love to write? We are having a Murder Mystery contest on our blog, and the books proceeds will be given to charity. Contestants write the chapters, and readers vote. Come join in the fun! http://www.the777man.com It is for charity remember!

    Peace be with you,
    Sallyjane
P.S. Congrats on Being Freshly Pressed!!!!!

    • Omg I love murder mystery! In fact when we made these christmas tree ornaments out of eggshells a few years ago mine had a murder mystery theme. I guess not quite appropriate for the holiday tree with children around. Whoops.

  3. Oh, my – taking turns at Mavis Beacon: silly but familiar (I think over here in the UK it was 92 when we got our first Mac)
Super pics – the table set with the big bowl of trifle(?) brought back scary memories
Thanks for sharing this, I really enjoyed it ;)

    • I wonder whatever happened to good ole Mavis . That really was such a fun game. We didn’t have video games. What can I say? We were 4 girls and just not into Nintendo or Atari. I’d say competetive typing and cutting all the hair off our barbi dolls was more out scene!

  4. OMG! What a great birthday blog, Mare! So, funny and gee, it’s just like it happened yesterday when I look at those pictures…especially you kids lined up to play mavis beacon….oh yeah, that was the best, ha ha. And that Hawaiin party was a fantastic b-day party but your sisters get most of the credit for that one although I did make that cake…but don’t remember how, cut and paste probably. Right on with your description of Little Lin! Very funny!

    Happy Birthday! xxxooo

  5. Hey! It’s my birthday today! In 1989 I was 8 and had one of my usual birthday parties – three girls, four boys (because my bff was a boy so he had to be invited but wouldn’t come if he was the only boy). No theme, just dressed fancy with yummy cake made by my neighbour (whose daughter also we a bff of mine). We’d watch movies, play games, but in January – for a girl who hates the cold…that was about all there was to do!

    Happy birthday!

  6. What a fun post. I could have been any one of those guests at your party. :) Brought back wonderful memories. I had a Hawaiian party for my sweet 16, and we made papier mache coconuts and cut out fronds from poster board — your mom, the teacher, sounds like a great influence! And your commentary on the pictures is priceless. Made me laugh out loud.

    • Thanks so much!!! My mom is a great influence. I wrote a birthday post for her called: This goes out to One Hot Mama, which you can read and see pictures of all her incredible skills, mainly wielding a bat. My mom and dad definitely knows how to have fun and passed that on to us kids!

  7. I was a victim of the bad perm, my head resembled the pyramids of Giza! Then my BFF and I coloured our hair with Kool-Aid powder, did you ever do that?!? LOL Ahh, 1989, such bittersweet memories…

    • Oh man, there are tons more! 80s and 90s! The way back machine never stops! I posted quite a few hilarious pics about my sisters and I’s amazing fashion throught middle school. They are in the category on top called Memories. So much more to come though… Just found some scrapbooks!!!!

  8. My friend had the same Apple computer, and I used to beg her to use it when I went over to her house! Oh, and I recently RE-discovered Paula Abdul’s Straight Up Now Tell Me, and there was something quite amazing about that day. It took me back to being 8 years old. Not a bad message, either, if you ask me.

    • All the music of the early 90s ruled if you ask me. I need to be posting about all my dance routines set to the classics from all the greats : tony toni tone, boys 2 men and of course NKOTB !!!

  9. Although it’s clearly obvious, I would loved to have been at that party! Pretty darn funny. These photographs (polaroids?) are what really brings it all home. The cake itself, while barely recognizable, is just perfect. What a wonderful post!

  10. I think people really wrongly pin the 80s as a whole as the worst fashion decade. In time we’ll realize it was the late 80s that killed all sense of taste. Good thing urine comes out in the wash or I would’ve been screwed. Loved these pictures!

    • I’m going to go ahead and say the early 90s were the worst. And I dare anyone to debate me. Half sweaters and long flowered skirts from Express? And let’s not forget black velvet chockers with silver hearts dangling ever so elegantly off the middle! Ah, man we looked good. Or at least Shannen Doherty did.

  11. Love your pictures! I don’t care what kind of filters they have on cameras now, nothing will ever be able to catch the grainy likeness of an old photo taken with a camera that had no automatic focus or flash. Now get off my lawn!

  12. MAVIS BEACON TYPING!!! I remember my dad being like “you need to learn it right the first time,” not realizing that there was a zero point zero percent chance my generation was not going to be able to type in its sleep.

  13. Looks like an Apple IIGS—we had the same one, the one that offered so much promise, and which Apple soon forgot about.

  14. You write like a dream — a very, very funny dream!

I remember my first Mac, 40 mg of RAM, (A Power User)
And folks at work all demanding: what was I gonna do with all that memory???

I’m bookmarking your blog. Your memories ROCK! Happy Birthday.

    • Thank you! I will be sure to write more posts about all our theme parties as there were tons. And yes, never a shortage on fun. I write a lot about my family in the memories category and if you wanna know about my mom and dad I wrote special birthday posts to them. They are absolutely hilarious.

  16. As I read this, I thought about how fun it would be to go back through my dorky past and share it in blog form, but alas, I fear I lack your breezy self-confidence! Kudos to you! My problem might simply be that my hair, too, was as wide as it was long. Sadly, no perm involved.

    • Ha ha ha!! No perm involved! I WISHED for full body curls my entire life. In fact I slept with rollers every night for the better part of a decade!! I wanted it high and wide!! You can see the greatest poofs of my youth in my post called you can’t handle the poof. I am pretty sure you be blown away by my styling techniques at age 12. ;)

      • Sounds like some of you could use a hot tip for capturing your own personal nostalgia/life memories. Try http://www.SaveEveryStep.com – it’s a free-to-use website where you can lay out your life stories/events in words and pictures on a chronological timeline. It’s really fun, addictive, and you can share it online (Or keep private if you prefer). Hope it works for some of you.

  17. That’s an awesome post, but as a matter of principle, I have to disagree with you. I was born in the early 90′s, so I have no great 80′s memories. :-) Sorry!
Good job on being Freshly Pressed! :-)

  18. Hilarious! I turned legal drinking age in 1989, so birthday memories from that year are a bit different. (Though, it was a bit anti-climatic, as I resided at the time in a country with a LDA of 18. Oh, well.) Love the photos and the aloha spirit! Happy Birthday!

    • Pretty much my whole life involved leotards and tears. In fact that may be the name of my memoir. ” leotards and tears : the mariclare Lawson story, a woman’s journey.” with of course the lifetime movie to follow!!

  19. hay, salam kenal,

  20. As an individual who will be seeing the 70 mark early next month, 1989 seemed just like last week to me. It is true that growing old is not for “Weenies.” This is especially true in observing all those that you love are dying around you.

  21. Wow- your family must’ve been so cool to get a home computer… in the 80s…lol! I did not get my first computer until the mid-90s! I love your hula party… ahh… such innocent sweet times we had back then… ;o)

  22. I was 4 in 1989 but the pictures say it all! I would love to go back to this time and rock it out! There’s way too much crap going on these days to have real fun like those pictures show! Notice nobody on their iphone? Nobody on their laptop? Everyone was engaged and enjoying each other… not others via technology. Nostalgia….

    • Well I mean we were like 11 years old! And we were dancing, whining, eating cake and of course crying, so there wasn’t much room for technology! I think even if I was a kid now I would prefer tears to technology :)

  23. Ahhhh, 1989. What a year, graduated from high school, moved to a new city for university and was legally able to drink (age 19 here in ontario), all while sporting oversized shirts and oversized hair.

  24. OK. This is the best thing I’ve read in 2012.

    And I read a lot.

Can’t wait to find out what the pee pad nation is, you seem too young for pelvic floor disorder…

Marking my calendar to read more with feet up.

Will then blog back about how, on this day, in 1989, my friends and I invented “the lawnmower dance” because we were nerdy study college seniors and too stressed to make it to the frats that night.

    Keep writing! ~ Kate

    • Thanks do much Kate! I am so happy someone FINALLY asked me about the pee pad nation although I have learned it is the quickest way to clear a room: start talking about pee pads. Long story short: my cat is basically a dog. Nuff said. I’ll post more tomorrow about my new found love of dolls. Normal once you hit 30, right?

  25. Haha!!
I remember the craze over the computer…we had am IBM, BC’s Quest for Tires was our only game. Big hair, screen prints and themes parties. Love it! Happy belated birthday and thanks for sharing!!

  26. I remember an uncle who was so scare Y2K was the end of us, he stocked up on bottled water, canned goods, and left our New Year’s Eve party at 10pm, despite living only 3 blocks away… I laughed then, and I’m laughing now… but speaking of 1989, I had that hair do, the one you sprayed up… and once my mom took a pic of me at a band concert. Only my face was blocked out by the kid in front of me. My hairdo ended up looking like peacock feathers or a lion’s mane over this kid’s head…. if only you could post a pic in a comment! LOL

    • Oh my god I just laughed out loud at your comment! I need to see this photo! It sounds epic. I love when the hair is so high it surrounds everyone it encounters !! You can email it to me and I will post it with your description. High hair forever!!

  27. through reading your most memorable birthday party it seems to me that in every occasion their should be a theme for us to know how important to remember your birthday!!!!!!

    • So true! And I must tell you, every party we have has a theme. In fact we even themed the holidays too. I remember on Easter in 1996 we themed it 80s. I think we went a little theme crazy. My sister was on roller skates at dinner!

    • Woah, what the heck is an apple 2c?? Sounds really high tech!!! If you think that party was campy I’d hate to show you some of my other birthday parties! Might as well have pitched a tent and had s’mores if ya know what I mean!

    • Aw thank you so much! All of the sudden I was like , who are all these people commenting?? I didn’t know I was on freshly pressed! Ha ha! I will forever be in love with cyndi lauper !!!

  28. I loved reading this post! I was born in 1988, so I don’t remeber the 80′s. However, the 90′s (at least the first four years) were just as memorable. The same wierd clothes and themed birthday parties. I remember a lion-cake that my mom made me once. :) I laughed a lot when I read the text for the half-eaten birthday cake.

    • Early 90s are severely under-rated as far as embarrassing fashions, music, etc goes. My sister and husband and I spend A LOT of time cracking up about the early 90sand what a weird mixed up time for pop culture it was. One word: ALF

  29. A friend of mine recently wrote a blog post about “Anticipation: The Trouble with Technology” http://kudzudad.blogspot.com/2011/12/anticipation-trouble-with-technology.html?spref=fb

The pictures you shared in this post are exactly what he was talking about!! I loved reading it. I would’ve been six years old in 1989, with fro’d out hair just like yours. Thank God I learned about moose and leave-in conditioner later on down the road. I totally understand your comment about “My frizz almost does not fit in the photo.” LOL!

    • I totally have to read that post! Also mousse totally brings me back because why was everyone in the 90s trying to get us to use mousse like it was water? I mean every commercial was a model squirting like a huge handful of whipped cream in her hand and smashing it in her hair! Whenever I did it my head was a big grease pot with frizzy ends!!

  30. What a fun trip down memory lane! In 1989, I was 31 and the mother of a 4-year old son and twin 2-year old boys. I had my second, and last, perm. We didn’t have a computer at home yet, except for a free one we got for taking a time-share tour at St. Augustine. I think you could play Pong on it and program in BASIC. We did have great theme parties for our children–usually involving pirates or cowboys.

    • Oh my god Darlene !!! Thank you so much for commenting. We are now officially a club. The I wet my pants in school at an above average age club. Members only. Just tell me this, we’re you wearing a skirt?

    • But honestly how were uncle Joey and uncle Jesse uncles?? I never did figure that one out. You will like my other post called TGIF speaking of which I miss TGIF , and I also wrote about good ole full house on my review of Martha Marcy May Marlene which stars baby Michelle’s little sister!

  31. As I was born in 1991, I quite regret not being born a few years younger. However, the best party I ever had in the 90′s was my 9th birthday party, just before the year 2000. My parents dressed up as clowns, there was TONS of people from school there, I even got my first aftershave which had the Disney character Hercules on it. I personally think the 90′s was the best era. Now, we’re classed as the Internet generation and all magic and discovery has disappeared.

Liked and followed, just for the frizz.

    • you are funny- if you think those styles are crazy, you better not look at my style galleries! I dress pretty much the same now-a-days! In fact when I was looking at my outfit from that birthday party I was like, “hmmmm…I wonder if I could find a hot pink leotard with poufy sleeves like that in my size now! And I think it’s time to bring the homemade lei back into fashion!”

  32. Congrats on getting Freshly Pressed! Get trip back to 1989! The cake and bday party looked so familiar…are you long lost sister?

  33. what a darling place you have I like to visit here…thanks for sharing your fun life…I came from twelve kids…it kinda reminds me of our family…until the BIG Armegeddon DIVORCE …another time another bog hehe…keep writing!!!

Maybe I’ll post some of my photos from yesteryear so we can all have a good laugh. I definitely had the big permed hair (does anyone perm anymore?!) . Loved your photos. Congrats on FP! Cheers, MoSop
